China Funds Pakistan Parliament’s Solar Power

Pakistan’s parliament became the world’s first to run fully on solar power. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif inaugurated the solar power system, which provides 62MW to the parliament and a surplus 18MW to the national grid.

The project was completed in seven months at a cost of Rs.280.61 million. First announced in 2014, the venture was funded by China as an act of friendship. It was officially launched during President Xi Jinping’s visit last year.

Sharif said, “It is encouraging to note that the parliament’s solar plant will not only meet its own energy requirements but the additional electricity will contribute to the national grid.”

The solar plant will help the parliament save around ` 12 million in electricity bills every year, officials said.
