India’s First Boilerless Sugar Refinery

Spray Engineering Devices Limited (SED), a leader in sustainable industrial engineering, has secured a turnkey contract to build India’s first boilerless greenfield sugar refinery project at Kandla, Gujarat. SED will also enter a long-term Operations and Maintenance (O&M) contract, ensuring sustained performance and efficiency well beyond commissioning. This is also the world’s first boilerless sugar refinery operating with zero water consumption and zero emissions.

Strategically located near India’s export corridors, the refinery will process 1,000–1,500 tonnes of sugarcane per day (TPD) and is targeted for completion by 31 March 2027. The facility introduces breakthrough sustainability features including Zero Water Consumption, achieved through closed-loop moisture recovery from raw sugar, and Lime Recalcination, enabling internal recovery and reuse of lime to minimize waste solids. Together with its boilerless design powered entirely by solar and wind energy, the project sets a new benchmark for circular engineering

Vivek Verma, Managing Director, SED

Vivek Verma, Managing Director, SED said, “This project is the culmination of SED’s mission to decouple industrial growth from environmental depletion. By achieving 99% sugar recovery and zero water consumption, we are proving that sugar refining can be a circular process.”

The refinery will operate with a Zero CO₂ Emission Target, aligning with global ESG mandates and reinforcing India’s position as a hub for green manufacturing technology. Designed for efficiency, it delivers export-quality sugar (<15 ICUMSA) while handling high-colour raw sugar inputs up to 1200 ICUMSA. Energy consumption is limited to ~70 kWh per tonne, and lime consumption will be ~1 kg per tonne of sugar, supported by recalcination.

Pravin Kumar Shishodiya Managing Director at Fullon Sugar Private Limited added By combining our expertise with SED’s engineering leadership, we are setting a new global benchmark for sustainable sugar refining and reinforcing India’s position as a hub for green manufacturing.”

By locating the plant at Kandla, the project is positioned to serve both domestic demand and international export markets with high-quality sugar produced under the cleanest industrial conditions available today, according to a company release. This contract reinforces SED’s role in helping heavy industry transition toward India’s 2070 Net Zero goals.

Established in 1992, Spray Engineering Devices Ltd. (SED) is one of the fastest-growing technology-driven companies, providing world-class integrated energy-saving equipment and solutions for water, biofuel, jaggery, and sugar industries across 40+ countries. Specializing in thermal waste heat recovery, evaporation, crystallisation, heat exchange, and condensation systems, SED holds over 100 global IP protections and operates three hi-tech manufacturing units in Baddi, Himachal Pradesh. Recognized by the Government of India for its in-house R&D, SED continues to pioneer sustainable innovations that redefine efficiency and environmental responsibility.
