Regulate Indoor Air Quality Now – Col. Ashwini K Channan, CEO, Airvoice India

Budget Expectation by Sustainability Leaders

“Air pollution continues to be one of India’s most pressing challenges, with 22 of the world’s 30 most polluted cities located in the country. While the Government of India has mandated AQI standards for outdoor ambient air, indoor air quality—where most of us spend 90% of our time—remains unregulated. It’s critical for the Financial Budget 2025-2026 to prioritize clean air as a fundamental right, not just outdoors but indoors too.

The government must incorporate mandatory indoor AQI standards into the National Building Code (NBC) and incentivize industries and real estate developers to adopt clean air technologies. For real estate, this could mean stamp duty concessions or tax breaks for projects that integrate advanced ventilation and purification systems. For industries, recognizing air quality budgets under CSR spend would encourage greater investments in sustainable operations.

Additionally, increased funding for public awareness campaigns and R&D in air purification technologies is essential. By allocating resources to incentivize innovation in clean air solutions, industries can ensure their plants and campuses meet safe AQ standards.

With an integrated approach that combines policy enforcement, financial incentives, and public awareness, the budget can pave the way for healthier cities and workplaces across India. Clean air isn’t just an environmental necessity—it’s a cornerstone for public health and economic productivity.”
