Amwoodo’s Turns Bamboo into a Climate Solution

A Kolkata startup is proving that green alternatives don't have to cost more, perform worse, or leave behind the communities that make them.

Agni Mitra, Co-founder and CEO, AMWOODO, shares his experience and insights with Benedict Paramanand, Editor, SustainabilityNext as part of the SN GreenLeaderSeries.

When most people think of sustainability, they imagine trade-offs: higher costs, limited availability, or products that struggle to compete with conventional alternatives. Amwoodo was founded to challenge that assumption.

Launched in 2019 by Agni Mitra, and co-founders Avijit Rajak and Sourav Dey, the Kolkata-based startup set out with a simple but ambitious belief: sustainable alternatives should not cost more, perform worse, or leave behind the communities that produce them.

What began during the uncertainty of the COVID-19 lockdown has since evolved into one of India’s most compelling sustainability success stories, built not in urban industrial centres but in the bamboo-rich regions of Tripura and West Bengal, where abundant natural resources and generations of artisanal expertise already existed.

At the heart of Amwoodo’s business is bamboo, one of the world’s fastest-growing renewable resources and a powerful tool in the fight against plastic pollution. Guided by its philosophy of “Zero Harm, Zero Waste, Zero Discharge”, the company has planted more than 1.1 million bamboo trees across 674 acres of afforested land, while neutralising approximately 2,83,500 metric tonnes of CO₂.

To make this transition practical for businesses, Amwoodo has developed Bamboo Polymer Composites, engineered veneers, and zero-plastic hospitality solutions now used by ITC Hotels, Taj Hotels, Hyatt, and Himalaya Wellness. Their adoption is not driven by sustainability mandates alone. These products compete on quality, design, durability, and cost.

Building Prosperity Alongside Sustainability

For Amwoodo, environmental impact is only half the story. The company operates on a direct procurement model that eliminates intermediaries and connects directly with over 1,200 smallholder farmers and traditional artisans, many of whom previously relied on hazardous employment in plastic and chemical manufacturing units.

Combined with fully sponsored skill-development programmes, this approach has helped participating families increase their monthly incomes from approximately ₹10,000 to nearly ₹30,000.

“True environmental sustainability cannot exist without economic sustainability for the people who guard our natural resources. We are building a legacy of self-reliance and green prosperity from the ground up.” Agni Mitra, Founder & CEO, Amwoodo

Proving That Sustainability Can Scale

In September 2025, Amwoodo secured a $4 million pre-Series A funding round led by Rainmatter Climate, with participation from the Adventz Group, ThinKuvate, and Caspian. The startup reported revenues of ₹52 crore last financial year and is targeting ₹100 crore in the near future.

As the global bamboo market moves towards an estimated value of $123 billion by 2032, the company is expanding beyond consumer products into home construction materials, B2B packaging, and structurally engineered bamboo applications. Environmental and livelihood metrics are independently audited through Rainmatter Climate portfolio disclosures and Upaya Social Ventures.

At a time when sustainability is often framed as an expensive aspiration, Amwoodo offers a different narrative, one where environmental restoration, rural economic empowerment, and commercial success reinforce one another. More than a bamboo company, Amwoodo is demonstrating that when sustainability is designed thoughtfully, it does not require sacrifice. It creates value for businesses, for communities, and for the planet.
