Bengaluru-based think tank CSTEP released a report titled “Implementation Plan for Electrification of Public Bus Transport in Bengaluru”.
It identifies key barriers to large-scale electric vehicle (EV) penetration and prepared a long-term implementation plan for public e-bus transportation in Bengaluru. The detailed assessment and framework presented in this report can serve as a template for planning a future e-bus transport ecosystem across other major Indian cities.
In this project, it analysed the transport and electricity distribution infrastructure in Bengaluru by working closely with the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC ) and the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM).
This project focussed on developing an e-bus fleet implementation plan, which includes:
- Identification of suitable BMTC routes for installing Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) or charging infrastructure
- A Geographic Information System (GIS) based integrated planning and visualisation tool for EV fleet implementation and operation
- A cost-benefit framework for e-bus variants
- Recommendations for large-scale e-bus deployment by 2030
