The funding will support research and product development to improve material performance, expand market reach across institutional and corporate spaces, and build strategic partnerships in manufacturing, research, and distribution.
This marks a key step as the startup moves toward commercialization and large-scale adoption.
Founded in 2024 by Sumeet Popli, Biome focuses on converting agricultural residue into engineered wood and furniture-grade materials. These products serve as eco-friendly alternatives to timber and plastic-based construction materials.
By utilizing farm waste often burned after harvest, the company addresses critical issues such as stubble burning, deforestation, high carbon emissions, and rural income instability.
Manufacturing Model
Biome’s manufacturing model delivers strong environmental and social impact by reducing tree cutting, lowering emissions, and generating additional income for rural communities.
Its straw-based boards are non-toxic, low-emission, and suitable for indoor use, making them a viable alternative to conventional materials.
Despite being an early-stage startup, Biome has gained traction across institutional campuses, corporate workplaces, and sustainability-focused events, reflecting growing demand for eco-friendly construction solutions in India.
The startup has received support from Government of India initiatives, including the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme, DST NIDHI PRAYAS, and Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RAFTAAR).
It has also earned recognition such as a nomination for the Earthshot Prize 2026 and Best Emerging Innovation 2025 by CII.
Biome is incubated at leading platforms like DTU Innovation and Incubation Foundation, a-IDEA NAARM, Atal Incubation Centre – CCMB, and BIRAC-BioNEST, and collaborates with organizations including Centre for Responsible Business, TechnoServe, and J-PAL.
With a manufacturing unit in Haryana capable of processing over 7,500 tonnes of agricultural residue annually, Biome is well-positioned to benefit from rising global demand, stricter environmental regulations, and increasing focus on sustainable, circular economy solutions.
